Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, but I have recently discovered a new love and appreciation for the dhoti (dho-tee) pant. They are so exotic, but more importantly they are SO FUN! They instantly revamp your look into a “oh so chic hipster vibe.” Comfy, twirl friendly, quirky, usually flamboyant and statement worthy, with a sprinkle of fobby, the dhoti pant is making a huge comeback. Forget the fact that it has reclaimed the fashion runways, dhoti pants are making a shift in the fashion world from the traditional Indian wear to making your outfit cool and contemporary.
Let’s be real, I love my South Asian heritage, and I incorporate a lot of that into my style. Wearing a shalwar kameez on a normal “non-dawat” related day can be a bit tricky. Especially in the Texas heat, most of my shalwars’ are also all heavily blinged out so I may be a blinding sight as well. I celebrate my South Asian influence in my fashion, and I truly wouldn’t have it any other way. Fashion is a form of expression, but it’s also a celebration of who I am, and I’m not going to pretend I wear head-to-toe black ensembles twenty-four seven. I’m an amalgam of heritage, culture, and traditions; and it’s bound to influence my fashion.
Dhoti pant silhouettes’ can be a bit overwhelming. I do not believe there is only one correct way to wear it either. You have to experiment and do what makes you comfortable. You can pair it with a casual tee shirt like I did and dress it up with a statement necklace, and heels. Or you can take the bold route, and embrace your inner hippy and pair with a flowy top and throw caution to the wind!
Just have fun and confident when you rock them! That’s the key, rock your dhoti style with total confidence and embrace your inner fobby cool chick!
